Benefits of Dance Classes for Children

Updated: Jan 10, 2024

The goal of dance classes for children is to improve their gross and fine motor skills and give them the opportunity to interact socially with children their age.

At ACBA, we focus on helping young dancers foster their creativity, spark their imagination, while developing their confidence. Our commitment to this goal is evident in how we keep our class sizes small so that we can give them each individualized attention.

While many parents enroll their children in dance for the fun, high-energy activity it provides, the benefits of dance classes reach far beyond the physical aspect.

We help set your child up for success with valuable life skills that can be applied outside of the studio. The personal and professional growth that we witness every day in each of our students is a testament to the following benefits:

1. Enhances Emotional Development

When children experience the joy of dance, they learn to express themselves in a way that’s beneficial to their physical and mental health. Dance provides a structured outlet for a healthy physical and emotional release that helps develop emotional maturity. By giving children the freedom to channel their emotions and energy in a safe environment, their self-esteem and confidence continues to improve as do their skills over time while instilling a love of dance at an early age!

2. Encourages Self-Expression

Dance encourages children to express themselves in many ways. When self-expression is fostered at an early age, children build trust with themselves and their peers, learn how to think critically, and develop creative problem-solving skills; all of which can be transferred to other aspects of life, like school or work.

3. Builds Social Skills

In dance class, children learn the value of teamwork, group participation and taking turns. It’s common for students to make lifelong friendships within the studio and feel a sense of belonging. While that first dance class might be challenging, students become more comfortable in class with other children and their teacher, they’ll begin to feel more confident interacting and participating within the group.

4. Increases Cognitive Development

Studies show that dance classes and music improve mental dexterity. The repetition of exercise, learning choreography, coordination, and mind/body connection improves children’s ability to absorb and remember information. Children are encouraged to practice, which teaches them the value of persevering until they succeed.

5. Improves Physical Health

Last but certainly not least, it’s no secret that dance is an excellent form of exercise! Children who develop a love of dance at an early age are motivated to stay active as they grow. No matter what style you choose, flexibility, range of motion, and stamina are all a part of the dance.

Not only are children participating in a high-energy and engaging activity, but they are also improving their balance, spatial awareness, agility, coordination, and endurance – all while having fun!

At the Anchorage Classical Ballet Academy, we are passionate about the important role dance classes have in a child’s life. We are dedicated to promoting the positive impact of dance by providing a safe environment where young children can grow, thrive, and learn essential life skills that will benefit them well into their adult years.
