The Story of the Nutcracker

The Nutcracker The Nutcracker story told by the Anchorage Ballet is based on Alexander Dumas’ revision of the original story written by E.T.A. Hoffmann.

ACT I The Holiday Party The Stahlbaums and their children, Clara, Franz, and Fritz, are hosting their annual Christmas Eve party at their home. Family and friends have come to decorate the Christmas Tree, as well as enjoy the party. As the giant clock strikes 8:00, Clara's godfather, Drosselmeyer, enters the Stahlbaum’s home. Drosselmeyer brought a special toy for one of the children, a wooden Nutcracker, that Clara was immediately taken by. After the party ends and Clara is sent to bed, she sneaks back to the Christmas tree to check on her beloved Nutcracker. Suddenly the clock strikes midnight and mice begin to fill the room as the Christmas Tree grows to an enormous height. Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between an army of soldiers, led by her now life-sized Nutcracker and the mice led by the mouse king. In an effort to save her Nutcracker Prince, Clara pulls on the Mouse King’s tail. The distraction leads the Nutcracker to victory. The Land of the Snow The Nutcracker Prince takes Marie on a journey through the Land of the Snow. The Land of the Snow is an enchanting forest full of magic and wonder. Once they arrive, the Snow Queen and her dancing snowflakes welcome them. The Nutcracker Prince and Clara depart on a sleigh pulled by magical caribou.

ACT II The Land of the Sweets The Nutcracker Prince escorts Clara to the magical Land of the Sweets. Upon arriving at the gates, Clara and her Prince are greeted by angels and introduced to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The people of the Land of the Sweets entertain Clara and the Nutcracker Prince with a Spanish Dance, a Raven Dance, a Snow Dragon, Candy Canes, Mother Ginger and her Polichinelles, a Dance of the Northern Lights, and a Waltz of Flowers. Before Clara and the Nutcracker Prince leave, the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier perform a beautiful pas de deux. Clara and the Nutcracker Prince say good-bye to all of their new friends and Clara's dream comes to an end. She wakes to find herself by the Christmas tree with her beloved Nutcracker doll.
